話說「教授」

在大學裏教書的，常被人稱作「教授」。在高等學府圈子之外，「教授」可以是籠統的說法，其功用好比「老闆」。顧客踏入店堂，有事要問櫃台後那位先生，可道一聲「老闆」，哪怕他看來不像是店東；夥計招呼顧客，也往往口稱「老闆」，不管對方是否生意場中人。這稱呼是禮數，卻算不上拍馬屁，也不是戴高帽；它恭而有禮，雙方都可接受。一般人隨口稱呼大學教師為「教授」，情形有點類似。

不過，在學府之內，尤其在執教於大學的行內人之間，這「教授」往往不是等閑可以混用的了。它是最高等級的大學教師的正式職稱，是頒給學識淵博、研究精深者的頭銜，是對格物致知、傳道授業而成績卓著者的表彰。要晉升為教授，須得經過申請、評議、推薦、審核、批覆等層層手續，很不簡單。尚未升到這一層次的人不敢僭號自稱，旁人也不便濫奉名銜，免得彼此尷尬。

使用「教授」稱號，在英國尤為嚴謹，因為英國的大學教師，最高級的是 Professor，其次是 Reader，再次是 Senior Lecturer （或 Senior Teaching Fellow ）和 Lecturer （或 Teaching Fellow ）。Reader 一詞頗難轉譯，英漢辭典有的說是「高級講師」，有的說是「準教授」，看來一時尚無合適的中文詞語來指稱這個既非「教授」也非「講師」的頭銜。Lecturer 是「講師」，應無疑義。在英國大學裏，唯有 Professor 才是「教授」，閑雜人不得擅用。英國人似乎服膺孔夫子，「唯名與器，不可以假人」。

在美國的大學裏，教授一詞用得很寬泛，因為美國 Professor 穿靴戴帽之後，自身繁衍出若干亞種，細辨起來很是麻煩，簡而稱之，通用 Professor 一詞，結果是「教授」滿校園。「十足」的 Professor 是 Full Professor，其次是 Associate Professor，再次有 Assistant Professor；十分傑出的 Full Professor 可升為「 Named Chair 」(冠以人名的講座教授)，再往上有 Distinguished Professor，更高的還有 University Professor 一級。

中國在清末改良維新，廢科舉、興學校，西洋（主要是英文）詞語傳入中土；轉譯 Professor，正好用上國產千年的「教授」。「教授」一詞始於宋朝，是太學（「中央大學」）裏某些學科的教師；而且從宋元直到明清，歷朝府、州、縣各級地方政府均設學官，最高者是府的學官「教授」，須為進士出身。「教授」有歷史、夠身份，配得上 Professor，於是沿用迄今。以此類推，各級 Professor 就是正教授、副教授、助理教授、附屬（或兼任）教授、講座教授、傑出教授、學府教授等等。

舊時中國的大學有採用英國制的，也有美國制的；香港為英國殖民地，用英國制。近年來，中國大陸、台灣、香港的大學有不少轉用美國制，或英美混合制。於是乎產生種種 Professor，再加上資深、非資深 Lecturer 和 Teaching Fellow，還有一級、二級 Tutor 和 Instructor，令人眼花撩亂。

英美的學生未必把教授當回事，他們會僅用小寫的 prof 來代替 Professor，好似香港學生用「阿蛇」（阿 Sir ）來指稱一切教師。台灣有人杜撰說文解字，定義「教授」為「會叫的野獸」。在中國大陸，某時期大學教師生活困頓，自嘆「越教越瘦（授）」。大學生擔憂無出路，自嘲「多讀多輸（書）」，師生對仗工整、平仄諧調，也算是苦中作樂。相比之下，西洋人的文字戲謔失色多了。

在中國人的社會裡，通稱大學中所有的助理教授以上職稱者為教授，以示尊敬倒也無可厚非。

On "Professor"

Anyone who teaches at a university can be called "Professor". Outside institutions of higher learning, "Professor" is used in a similar way to "Boss" as a common form of address. When a customer steps into the shop, he will address the man behind the counter as "Boss", though the latter might not look like the owner of the shop. The salesman will address a customer as "Boss" irrespective of whether the latter is or isn't a businessman. This form of address is used as a kind of social etiquette. Instead of fawning on or flattering the other side, this respectful form of address is acceptable to both sides. It's a similar case to the addressing of any university teacher as "Professor".

However, among the faculty of institutions of higher learning, "Professor" should never be used randomly. It is a senior professional title conferred upon erudite scholars and profound researchers. It is employed to honour those faculty members who succeed in attaining outstanding achievements in research and teaching. In order to be promoted to professorship, one has to go through the following rigid formalities: application, appraisal, recommendation, examination and approval. Those who have yet to gain this senior professional title dare not assume the title. In order to avoid embarrassment on both sides, nobody refers to him as "Professor".

In Britain one must be scrupulous in the use of the title "Professor". University teachers there are graded incrementally from the highest grade, Professor, to Reader, Senior Lecturer (or Senior Teaching Fellow) to Lecturer (or Teaching Fellow). In some English-Chinese dictionaries "Reader" is translated as 高級講師 or 準教授. No appropriate Chinese equivalent denotes the non-professor and non-lecturer titles. "Lecturer" is equivalent to 講師. In British universities, only the title "Professor" means 教授 . Nobody else deserves this professional title. English people seemly follow the Confucian principle on adopting proper forms of address.

In American universities the word "Professor" is used more loosely. "Professor" is extended to encompass Full Professor, Associate Professor and Assistant Professor. As a result, professors can be found everywhere on campus. Outstanding "Full Professors" can be further promoted to Named Chair, Distinguished Professor or even University Professor.

During the reform and modernisation movement of the late Qing Dynasty, the imperial civil examination system was abolished and schools set up. With the introduction of titles in Western languages (mainly the English language), "Professor" was translated as 教授, a Chinese word which had existed for a thousand years. The Chinese word 教授, which originated in the Song Dynasty, meant the teachers of some courses offered in the Imperial College. Moreover, there was a position of "academic official" in the local governments at the prefecture and county levels throughout the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. The highest academic official was at the prefecture level, called "教授" . Only those who passed the highest imperial civil service examination were qualified to be 教授. 教授, which had academic credentials and high social status, was a perfect match for the English word "Professor". That's why it has become the equivalent to "Professor". Different kinds of professors are hence translated as 正教授、副教授、助理教授、附屬（或兼任）教授、講座教授、傑出教授、學府教授 etc.

In the old days, some Chinese universities adopted the British system while others adopted the American system. As a former British colony, Hong Kong adopted the British system. In the past few years some mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong universities have adopted the American system or the British-American mixed system. As a result, a great variety of professors came emerged. Together with senior or non-senior lecturers and teaching fellows as well as tutors and instructors (I/II), the numerous professional titles are dazzling.

British and American students may not take "professors" too seriously. They can simply use the non-capitalised "prof" to mean "Professor", just as the students in Hong Kong tend to refer to all teachers as "阿Sir". Some people in Taiwan use homophones to define 教授 as 叫獸 ("yelling beast”). When university teachers lived under strained circumstances in the early Twentieth Century China they sometimes explained 教授 as 越教越瘦（授）("the more you teach, the thinner you become"). The university graduates were worried about their future and explained 多讀書 as 多讀多輸（書） (The more you read, the more heavily you lose.) The well-balanced, rhyming homophones invented by the teachers and students serve as a good example of enjoying life in adversity. So far as a play on words is concerned, Westerners don't stand comparison with the Chinese.

In a Chinese society all university teachers above the rank of "assistant professor" are addressed as "Professor". It's only reasonable for Chinese people to show respect for university teachers in this way.

Abstract

The Father of the Internet, Vint Cerf, said: "The Internet is a mirror of the society". This talk will take the audience in a tour inside this mirror.

The Chinese Internet is a great mystery to many, because of its enormous size, unfathomable growth, government regulations, beaten American giants, and fascinating stories. In this talk, Dr Lee will explain why the foreign companies failed and local ones succeed. He will compare the Chinese Internet to the American Internet in their development, usage, and demographics. He will explain why the Chinese video, social networking, search, gaming, instant messaging, marketplace, payment, blogging/microblogging evolved in somewhat different directions from the American Internet. He will analyze the three giants (Alibaba, Baidu, Tencent) and their rise to power. He will evaluate market opportunities in e-commerce, gaming, mobility and cloud computing. And he will remark on cultural and societal implications based on these observations.

Biographical Sketch

Dr Kai-Fu Lee founded Innovation Works in September 2009. Innovation Works is a business creation platform geared to create the next wave of Chinese high-tech companies and to mentor the next-generation of Chinese entrepreneurs. It is focused on Internet, Mobile Internet, and cloud computing. Every year Innovation Works will prototype some twenty new ideas, aiming to spin off several independent companies.

Prior to starting Innovation Works, Dr Lee was a Google Vice President and the President of Google Greater China. During his tenure at Google, Dr Lee has built-up a 700-person organization with many successes.

Dr Lee spent seven years at Microsoft before joining Google and held the position as Corporate Vice President. During his days at Microsoft, he founded Microsoft Research Asia, one of the world’s top research labs, and is called “the hottest computer science laboratory” by MIT Technology Review.

Dr Lee taught as an Assistant Professor from 1988-1990 at Carnegie Mellon, where he received his PhD. His PhD thesis was the world's first speaker-independent continuous speech-recognition system. This system was selected as the "Most Important Innovation of 1988" by Business Week. He also developed an Othello-playing program that won the world championship and also defeated the human champion.

Dr Lee is the author of four best-selling books in China, and has given speeches to about half a million students in China. Dr Lee is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Vice Chairman of the Committee of 100, an elite group of Chinese Americans.

I, NG Ka-Ho, have been studying in CityU for over 6 years (obtained my BE and MPhil and pursuing my PhD). CityU is my second home. I would like to serve and contribute to my Alma Mater.

As General Secretary of City University Postgraduate Association (CUPA), I work very hard on CUPA's 4 main fields of activities: membership, mentorship, leadership and citizenship. For example I have organized Rock Climbing Fun Days, Shenzhen University Exchange Visit, “Say No to Shark Fin Soup” Campaign, Seminar by “the first Chinese woman who conquered the World’s 7 highest mountains and the 2 Poles”, etc. since March this year. Besides, I also organized a series of hiking activities, e.g. Hiking Fun Days and Trailwalker Trainings.

I am also a member of the Board of Graduate Studies and the Academic Conduct Committee of CityU. Moreover, I am a member of the Student Complaints Panel. I attended most of the meetings of these committees, in which I spoke out the thoughts of CityU students and did my best to protect their interests.

outstanding in that aspect. Being in the EDT means being a critical thinker and a competent speaker in English.

Once selected, you may travel to different countries to compete in international tournaments with the
University’s subsidies. And in the international tournaments, you will compete with some of the smartest minds
in universities around the world. You will be able to meet foreign friends and learn from each other.

w Think smart !
Debating requires critical and logical thinking. It helps to polish your analytical skills. And you also need to
think fast, because you only have 15 minutes to prepare for your speech in BP style debates.

w Become aware of global issues
You have better chance winning if you have more knowledge of the current issues around the world. You will
then find greater motivation to read more news and get to understand different issues in more in-depth ways.

w STAND OUT from the crowd
It is nice to have good public speaking skills. You never know when you will need it.

It has been some time since your UE exam. Secondary school English is the best you can be? Think again.

Re: Reminder - Locker Clearance Exercise (Aug 2010)

Pleased be reminded that the expiry date of the use of student lockers for the academic year 2009-10 is 31 July 2010 (Saturday).

All locker users should clear their lockers and remove their padlocks on or before 31 July 2010.

The annual locker clearance exercise will be carried out in Aug 2010. Student Development Services will cut all padlocks after 3 August 2010 and all property found therein will be disposed without any notice. The University shall in no circumstances be responsible for the safe keeping of any items found in the lockers and any loss or damage in connection therewith.

Make sure you have cleared all your property and you should leave the locker empty. DO NOT LEAVE any useless items inside the lockers, and please remember to bring back your padlock.

In order to control and prevent mosquito problem, fumigation will be carried out on 1 July 2010 (Thursday) from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the open areas of the University including the Hillside Trail, Chinese Garden and in the vicinity of the swimming pool.

To minimize the chance of exposure to pesticides, please kindly be advised not to enter the above-mentioned areas on the said date and time.

Nelson: 現在情況不一樣了，我數月前買了樓，現在超過一半的月薪用來供樓，所以我不會花錢在冇必要的東西上，我知道現在很多人都跟我一樣。

Bob: Wow, that's really a burden. I mean no offence, but what if there is another financial crisis and you lose your job？ Then…

Nelson: I don't know. I haven't thought that far.

Bob: Why are the real estate prices so high in Macao？

Joe: I guess it has to do with the foreign speculators.

Nelson: Exactly. Some think that the real estate prices are controlled by the supply and demand of its market, but the problem now is that it's no longer just the local residents' supply and demand regulating the prices, but also wealthy foreign speculators, changing the rules of the game.

Joe：很多港澳人都喜愛買新的手機，好像是一種潮流的表達方式，每當有新的手機推出市場，人們就會爭先購買。

Bob：美國人平均每十八個月會換手機，這裡更加快。

Joe：這是件悲哀的事，因為人們購買越多手機，最終掉進垃圾堆的手機也越多。在堆塡區，這些電子廢物會釋放出有毒物質並破壞環境。

Bob：所以現時在加州，人們要為他們買的電子產品付一筆最終循環再造的費用。

Joe：這樣做很公平。

Bob：這條法例亦鼓勵人們用他們的電子產品更長時間，因為有了這個額外的收費，他們在購買新產品前都會三思。這法例亦對製造商有好處！

Joe：Many people in Hong Kong and Macau love to buy new cellphones, which are kind of like a fashion statement these days. As soon as a new one comes onto the market, people will scramble to buy it.

Bob：Americans on average replace their cellphones every 18 months. It’s even faster here.

Joe：Which is sad because the more phones people buy, the more phones will go to the dump eventually. In land fills this electronic waste releases toxins that can damage our environment.

Bob：That’s why in California now people need to pay a fee to cover the eventual cost of recycling the electronics they buy.

Joe：That’s fair.

Bob：This law also encourages people to use their electronics longer because, with this extra cost, they will think twice before buying new ones. It can benefit the manufacturers too！

Joe：Wait！Shouldn’t they be losing profits when less people buying their stuff?

Bob：Not really. When manufacturers introduce new products, they lose sales of their existing ones. So, putting out new products too quickly does not necessarily mean more profits in the long term.

Joe：That makes sense！

Bob：If manufacturers have longer development time, the new products coming out can be much better than the previous ones. And if people anticipate using a product for longer, they are willing to pay more for it.

【明報專訊】後天便是2010年，到底「2010年」的英文該怎樣念才對呢？有人認為應念作twenty-ten，但有人則念成two thousand and ten，甚至有人念two-o-one-o。英國廣播公司（BBC）的電台節目，近日亦討論這個問題，他們最後傾向念作「twenty-ten」。

如何念2010年這個令人困擾的問題，日前成了BBC電台節目的話題。這個節目由英國科幻劇集《Doctor Who》演員坦南特（David Tennant）與林泰特（Catherine Tate）主持。

老一輩念two thousand and ten

坦南特在節目中將2010年念成twenty-ten，並祝聽眾新年如意。泰特接著說﹕「twenty-ten……原來如此！看來你很遵守BBC的發音守則。」然後，坦南特向節目嘉賓克里賓斯（Bernard Cribbins）說：「我們認為應念twenty-ten。」

不過，克里賓斯認為，老一輩的人大多傾向念成two thousand and ten。泰特說：「你不能念成two thousand and ten……BBC發音部門的人會氣炸的。」

BBC設部門決定統一念法

BBC設有一個部門，決定各節目應採用的統一發音。BBC表示，該部門尚未決定2010年的念法。BBC發言人說：「節目錄製之前，大家一致認為twenty-ten是最容易發音的念法，但用其他方式來念也不算違規。」

古時候馬匹最大的功用就是協助人類搬運貨物。通常我們會將放置貨物的車輛掛在馬兒的後方這樣它才能順利的拖運。但是如果把拖運貨物的車輛改放置在馬的前方，想想看這樣是不是位置相反，也就是我們說的本末倒置。所以要事情能夠順順利利照著原來的計劃進行，就請記得要 put the horse before the cart 而不是 put the cart before the horse. 本末倒置的結果不但吃力而且是事倍功半。

平常的 toilet，bathroom，restroom，lavatory 當然都可以用，但英國人在日常生活對話中，最常說的肯定是 the loo。

另外，在朋友家中，我習慣說 the bathroom，因為好像較有禮貌。

英國人喜歡用 "the loo".

上洗手間在美語用法中有很多種說法，其中最為口語的說法是 Take a leak 。 Leak 的意思是流出或漏出，把體內多餘的液體給排出去，也就是我們所說的上廁所。每天多喝水再 Take a leak 對身體絕對是有好處。

中英例句：

「惡性循環」是 vicious circle 還是 vicious cycle ？
Circle 、 cycle 都可以解作「循環」，
例如： Going to work, getting home, going to work again ─ ─ it is a tedious circle / cycle （上班、回家、又上班 ─ ─ 這是個沉悶的循環）。四季的循環，也可以叫做 the circle / cycle of the seasons 。
查第六版《牛津高階英文詞典》和第三版《朗文當代高級英文詞典》，都只有 vicious circle 一條。英文學者 Norman Lewis 所著 The New Dictionary of Good English 則 vicious circle 和 vicious cycle 並列，但注明 The correct form is vicious circle （ Vicious circle 才是正確寫法）。不過， cycle 既然也可以指「循環」， vicious cycle 一詞沒有理由不可以用，事實上也和 vicious circle 同樣流行，第四版《朗文當代高級英文詞典》兩詞並錄，視為同義。例如： Poor countries are often caught in a vicious circle / cycle of poverty and debt, which proves almost impossible to break （貧困國家往往陷入貧窮、負債的惡性循環之中，難以自拔）。
Next of kin 和 next to kin 有甚麼分別？
Kin 是「親戚」，是集合名詞（ collective noun ），不可說 a kin ，例如： He and all his kin live in Macao （他和他所有親戚都住在澳門）。英文沒有 next to kin 這說法，只有 next of kin ，指最近親，單複數形式不變，例如： I am / We are his next of kin （我 ? 我們是他的最近親）。 Kin 作形容詞，則可和 to 連用，例如： Is he kin to the manager ？（他是經理的親戚嗎？）

港小姐一向標榜美貌與智慧並重，不過，在早前港姐面試過程中，佳麗質素頗為平庸。本報昨日接獲一封自稱是首輪面試佳麗 Lucy的英文投訴電郵，指面試當日評判態度欠佳，揚言「 hurt die me」

我是 Lucy, I went to Miss Hong Kong first interview. Wah d judges very
not polite and not nice law. Today I see a megazine saying this year's
Girls so ugly. I saw many good and pretty girls there but they didn't
choose ja ma. Don't choose mei suen law but the judge in first
interview-- most very not polite to many young girls and to to me law. I
only 18 the judges ask me to"why join Miss HK go and why not study la u
only F7 ja wor how can fright with other wor." Also say my English bad…

Ho La, other girl tell me la, she study in University ok ga dou but
little fat or short then the judge(woman) said " why you look fat or so
short!" wah ho hurt ga ma.
One girl is a博士 student ar very high level and very nice ga dou cant
get in second interview la. We think she will be in ga but she said no
law. You can search her pic and my pic to see la. She gum high level duo
ng dak, gum me ng duk duo rite gei but i think the whole choosing is not
fair law, choose model mei? young yao inch', high study level yao inch,
short yao inch… They onky choose rich girl law so bad.
We don't go and let them inch ga law if they need tall or high level
people then why not put in the application form lei.

我?唔係去?度畀佢?寸?囉，如果佢?要生得高同高學歷?女仔，咁點解唔寫?申請表度呢。

有否想過到發展中國家進行義工服務？希望透過實際行動改變世界嗎？現在有一個難得的機會讓你履行世界公民的責任！Humanity in Focus(HIF)很高興在此宣佈：青年世界公民計劃2009(YGCP 2009)正式接受申請！

YGCP 09 takes you into the poverty-stricken places of Cambodia on a life-changing journey. You will be guided to explore and discover the societal problems and conflicts that are affecting the lives of many people and children who suffer from poverty. There are in fact, many linkages that can be drawn between their lives and our own. It is therefore YGCP09's aim to promote the concept of global citizenship and provide a learning opportunity for passionate youth to serve for a better world!

青年世界公民計劃2009將會令你親身體驗到受貧窮困擾的柬埔寨的困境。於旅途中，你會逐步發現貧困國家的低下層人民每天都被不同社會問題及衝突所影響。事實上，我們與他們的生活存有莫大的聯繫。HIF希望通過青年世界公民計劃2009，宣揚世界公民的概念，以及向有志人士，提供一個到發展中國家體驗的機會。

In order for participants to grasp a deeper knowledge on global and humanity issues before they embark on the experience trip, a series of training workshops and camps will be organized by HIF to stimulate learning. Moreover, participants will have an opportunity to join other members of HIF in raising local awareness towards poverty and humanity issues after the trip.

為了讓參加者對世界大事及人道問題有更深的體會和認識，我們將會安排一系列的工作坊及體驗營。此外，參加者有機會在完成計劃後加入HIF這大家庭，從事更多本地的宣傳及教育工作，藉此提高本地人對貧窮及人道問題的關注。

About HIF

Humanity in Focus was set up by a group of university students who returned from a services project in Cambodia in summer 2006. It is one of the first youth initiated and managed NGOs in Hong Kong focusing on global humanity and poverty issues. We believe that everyone has a role to play in relieving global poverty and inequality, and starting as youth is of particular importance.

Dr. William Kwok Lun Fung
Dr. William K. Fung, SBS, OBE, JP aged 59 was born in Hong Kong
in 1949 and completed his secondary schooling at King George V
School in Hong Kong in 1966. He then entered Princeton University
in the U. S. A. and graduated with a B. S. E. with Honours in 1970.
Thereafter, he obtained an M. B. A. degree from the Harvard
Graduate School of Business Administration in 1972. Holds a
Degree of Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa by the
Hong Kong University of Science & Technology in Year 1999. Dr. Fung is married with one
child.
After completion of his schooling in the United States, Dr. Fung joined Li & Fung Limited in
1972 as Divisional Manager of Textile & Garment Division. Thereafter, he managed various
areas of Li & Fung’s activities and is now Group Managing Director of the Li & Fung Group.
Dr. Fung was a former member of the Textiles Advisory Board, Hong Kong Trade
Development Council, Hong Kong Tourist Association Board of Management, Provisional
Hospital Authority, Basic Law Consultative Committee, The Preparatory Committee for The
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of The National People’s Congress, The
Selection Committee for The Election of the SAR Chief Executive & the Provisional
Legislature of Hong Kong, Economic Advisory Committee to the Financial Secretary,
Council of the Stock Exchange of the Hong Kong Limited, Board of Review of the Inland
Revenue Ordinance and Board of Trustee of the Lord Wilson Heritage Trust, etc. He was
also a past Chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the Hong Kong
Exporters’ Association and Pacific Economic Cooperation Committee.
Dr. Fung is also active in a number of social and educational clubs and associations. He was
a former member of Young Presidents’ Organization and a past Chairman of its China
Chapter, the Princeton Club of Hong Kong, the Harvard Business School Association of
Hong Kong, Governors of the Pacific Club and was a past President of the Harvard Club of
Hong Kong.
Dr. Fung is a non-executive Director of HSBC Holdings PLC and Chairman of its Corporate
Sustainability Committee. An independent non-executive director of VTech Holdings
Limited and Shui On Land Limited.
In 1993, Dr. Fung was obtained the Executive Award from the SCMP/DHL HK Business
Awards. He was named by Business Week as one of the top 25 Managers in an international
poll in 1998 and also chosen by Forbes Magazine as Businessman of the Year with his
brother, Dr. Victor K. Fung in Year 2006. Dr. Fung is also the co-author of the book
“Competing in a Flat World”. He was awarded the Justices of the Peace in August 1989 and
also Officer of The Most Excellent Order of The British Empire (O.B.E.) in Year 1995. In
2008, Dr. Fung has awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star (S.B.S.) by the Government of the
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for his significant contribution to the
development of Hong Kong as a leading international trading hub and for his outstanding
public service in the areas of trade promotions and economic development.

Ms. Mary Ma
Mary Ma is the partner and managing director of TPG Capital. Before joining TPG, Mary Ma was the Senior Vice President and the Chief Financial Officer of Lenovo Group Limited. She joined the Group in 1990 and was appointed Executive Director in 1997.

Ms. Ma also worked for the Chinese Academy of Sciences（中國科學院） before Lenovo, where she managed technology research projects jointly developed by China and Europe. She was also involved in the administration and liaison（聯絡）of World Bank loan projects of technology research in China.

Ms. Ma was born in Tianjin, China. After graduating from the Capital Normal University（首都師範大學）in Beijing in 1976, she pursued(追求) further study at King’s College of the London University in the United Kingdom. She has over 27 years’ experience in financial and executive management.

She was nominated for(被提名為) membership of The Hong Kong Institute of Directors in 2000 and has been a member since then. Ms. Ma was selected by Asiamoney magazine as the Top Executive of 2005 (China). She was also named by FinanceAsia magazine as one of the Best CFO in 2002 and 2006 respectively, and received the Outstanding Women Entrepreneurs Award in 2002. Ms. Ma has been a member of the Dean’s Council of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University since 2002. She is also an independent non-executive director of Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited and a director of Shenzhen Development Bank. And she serves Lenovo Board as Non-executive Vice Chairman.

Dr. Victor Kwok King Fung

Dr. Victor K Fung, GBS, CBE aged 62, is the Group Chairman of the Li & Fung group of companies, which includes major subsidiaries in Trading, Distribution and Retailing, including publicly listed Li & Fung Limited, Integrated Distribution Services Group Limited and Convenience Retail Asia. He also is Chairman of the Hong Kong University Council and the Greater Pearl River Delta Business Council.

Dr. Fung holds a number of civic and professional appointments. He is Chairman of International Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference; and a member of the Commission on Strategic Development. From 1991 to 2000, Dr. Fung was Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, from 1996 to 2003, he was the Hong Kong representative on the APEC Business Advisory Council, and from 1999 to May 2008, he was Chairman of the Airport Authority Hong Kong.

Dr. Fung is Chairman, Asia Advisory Board of Prudential Financial, Inc (USA), an independent non-executive Director of Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited and Orient Overseas (International) Limited in Hong Kong, Baosteel Group Corporation in the People’s Republic of China and CapitaLand Limited in Singapore.

In 1995, Dr. Fung was voted Businessman of the Year under the Hong Kong Business Awards Scheme for his success as an entrepreneur and for his contribution to Hong Kong’s economic development. He also was chosen Hong Kong Leader of the Year in 1998 and was named by Business Week as one of 50 Asian leaders leading the region out of economic crisis. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1993 in recognition for his commitment to public service. In 1997, the University of Hong Kong
conferred upon him an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Laws and in 2001 he was awarded the Harvard Medal for outstanding service to Harvard University. In 2003, the Hong Kong Government awarded Dr. Fung the Gold Bauhinia Star (GBS) for distinguished service to the community.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Dr. Fung holds Bachelor and Master Degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Doctorate in Business Economics from Harvard University. He also taught as a professor at the Harvard Business School for four years before returning to Hong Kong in 1976. Dr. Fung is married with three children.

In the very first issue of Macau Closer, Mr. Stanley Ho said in an interview, and I quote,"I believe Hotel Lisboa should stay on at least for another 25 years". That was one year ago, but in the meantime SJM announced the old Lisboa is coming down. Why this radical change of plans in such a short time?

We always had internally very robust discussions on that topic, and I think we are doing what is best for our company.
We anticipate(預期,期望) the architects(建築師) will include some of the old elements in the new design; so we don't want to close our minds to anything - we just want to know what they come up with.
That's why we haven't been too specific. I think the instinct(直覺) is always to defend what is so close to your soul. Let's see what these guys will come up with.
I guess the first display will be done in about 10 weeks time. Then everyone will be able to do their own comments.

Have you got already a schedule for Grand Lisboa’s full opening?
Frank : We already have the first 19 floors working, they are just not open to the public so we use them to accommodate(能容納;能提供) our VIP guests.
If you ask me – for me that I’m relatively new here, 4 year only – something related with Government construction procedures, and our own construction companies procedures.
I admin it is for me completely fog(霧,困惑).
Anyway, I guess we have an inspection today, so let’s see how the inspection(檢查,視察) goes.
We hope to open before Easter, but till the license is actually stamped(貼郵票於;蓋章於;打上(標記等)) your tend(走向,趨勢) not to make predictions on it.

What brand new feature it will be adding to our hotel industry?
It’s a 230 meter building in the peninsula(半島), with rather(相當,頗) large and luxurious rooms.
Alongside(在...旁邊;沿著...的邊) with Wynn, MGM, Starworld, The Royal Arc and others, it’s located in the Lakes development area, which is more integrated into the local Macau environment.
And then there is a brand new area of development, which has far more space, where there’s lower density(密集) and exhibitions(展覽會), in the Cotai Strip.
Most people are in both sides if they did not believe in both of them.
The market seems to be symbiotic(共生的) in that you have one area that is primarily(主要地) gaming motivated, and you have another that is business motivated.
And of course there will be an overlap, but everybody is investing in both locations to make sure they have coverage(覆蓋) .
So it’s very interesting, and not like the traditional Las Vegas market, where everyone reinvented(重複發明) themselves in the Strip and let the centre die.

The building has been a matter(事情,問題,事件;事態) of great controversy(爭論;爭議). What is your opinion about it?
It’s a difficult building to manage, but it’s a wonderful building to look at. And that is what normally happens.
It was built for aesthetic(美學的;審美的) reasons, in order to make a statement, and I think it will end up in the stamps. It will become – one of the most used words nowadays in Macau – “iconic”(肖像的,代表性的).
Just like the old Lisboa, which became a statement for a new Macau when it was first designed, the Grand Lisboa will soon become one of Macau’s landmarks. It’s fabulous(驚人的,[口]極好的) to look at.
And it’s difficult to run because it has so many floors.
Our gaming is on 4th floor, while everyone else have them on 1st floor; we recognize that, but that’s the cost of having this sort of draw.

What kind of building can you raise next to this one?
That’s interesting to think about. That’s why when we started looking at redeveloping the old Libora in order to compete with the new entrants in the market across the road, our idea was to let people know what we are doing.
So we’ve got at the moment eight architects from Europe, United States, Southeast Asia and Hong Kong involved in a design competition where a panel familiar with Macau will have the final say.
We want to show the initial designs and let the public comment on them.
I don’t know what is will come out in the end, but I think it can work.

“SJM now is able to compete”
He’s the man in charge of business development inside Stanley Ho’s empire. And he says future never looked so bright(前途光明的).

Frank McFaddn, 51, was born in Belfast in a catholic ghetto and had to leave during what are euphemistically (委婉地;婉言地) called “the troubles”. His professional career took him to seven different countries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, before turning Macau into his home, where he has been living for the past 4 years with his three children. Fluent in English, French and German, he's now starting to study Mandarin.

A former(從前的;前任的) rugby(英式橄欖球[) player - pretty obvious if you have in mind his roots and his physical stature - he's also a soccer fan and a dedicated(專注的) supporter of Manchester United, which recently opened their world's biggest shop at his former employer's resort The Ventian, in the Cotai Strip.

No regrets(後悔) tough(頑固的) - he's now fully concentrated on the opening of SJM's Grand Lisboa Hotel and other new projects of company. And he keeps smiling.

其實很簡單。

因為我以前是學芭蕾舞的.
I learnt ballet in the past.

8歲開始學了9年專業的芭蕾舞.
From the age of eight, I took up professional ballet training for nine years.

但是後來因為個子太高
But I was too tall.

沒有男孩子跟我配舞
It was impossible for me to find male dance partners.

後來就轉行做了模特兒.
So, later. I switched to modeling instead.

但芭蕾到現在還是我心中一個夢想.
But ballet, to these days, is still a dream of mine.

其實我決得可能…
Actually, I think maybe…

現在如果再讓我去跳芭蕾舞的話,
